The 5 Wais
The 5 Wais Tool is a culturally grounded framework rooted in Māori principles, designed to guide Māori community engagement. Developed in 2015 and updated in 2020 with Atawhai Tibble, this tool is based around powerful questions that provide a foundation for meaningful engagement, collaboration, and partnership with Māori communities. It is also useful for grounding engagement with non-Māori communities, helping interactions to be culturally aligned and resonant. Maybe a meeting is not the best way - a kapu tī, whakarongo and kōrero might be better.
Jane Dove Juneau provided the images which were taken during a hikoi to Parihaka in 2016 that Catalyse took part in. Led by Andrew Judd, this hikoi was a significant call to action against racism in Aotearoa, specifically advocating for Māori wards in local authorities.
