Let's do it: Chalk-Walks

Chalk Walks
Two-dimensional playgrounds
Bringing Community Spaces to Life
through Art and Play

Chalk Walks are simple two-dimensional playgrounds that transform concrete pathways into joyful, interactive, community-centred spaces. This unique service from Catalyse uses eco-friendly chalk paint to create temporary footpath games and art installations that invite people to move, connect, and engage with the spaces in meaningful ways.

How Chalk Walks Work

Each Chalk Walk is designed to suit the specific character of the space it is in. Our team will collaborate with you to select themes, game types, and locations that align with your goals - whether it’s enhancing community connection, promoting cultural engagement, or guiding visitor flow.

Social Connection

Chalk Walks encourage people to pause and connect with each other, creating shared moments that strengthen community ties.

Community Wellbeing

Chalk Walks bring people together through play, which research shows can relieve stress and boost mood. The games encourage gentle movement
and social interaction, benefiting people of all ages.

Wayfinding and Safety

Our team can strategically place games and prompts to guide visitors away from restricted zones or highlight areas where caution is needed, such as near road crossings.

Welcoming Environments

By encouraging playful interaction, Chalk Walks draw people in and enhance local vibrancy. Increased foot traffic improves public safety and supports local businesses.

Research shows that children playing in public spaces fosters community cohesion, deters crime, and increases the perception of safety by signaling active, well-monitored areas.

Chalk Packages:

All packages include:
A consultation, a catalogue of the games, site visit, surface prep, primer, base coat, 2 layers of top coat

What are the big, medium and small games?

Big Games – Stay, Play, and Connect

Big games are perfect for places where you want people to pause, stay, and immerse themselves in play. These larger installations, like The Floor is Moana, Snakes and Ladders, and intricate mazes, invite deeper interaction and shared experiences. They require more time and materials but reward communities with spaces that encourage lingering, laughter, and connection.

Medium Games – A Playful Pause Along the Way

Medium games add playful surprises along the way, turning an ordinary walk into an experience of curiosity and movement. These games, such as Mirror Me, Dance Steps, Hopscotch, and Continue the Drawing, capture attention just long enough to add energy and rhythm to a stroll. They invite people to interact with each other, engage their bodies, and infuse a bit of lighthearted fun into their journey.

Small Games – Noticing, Exploring, and Playing

Small games act as playful prompts that spark awareness and observation. Simple questions like “How many birds can you see?” or “Find something shaped like a circle” invite people to explore their surroundings in new ways. We love these because they encourage both kids and adults to be present, notice details, and interact with the space in a thoughtful, joyful way -reminding us that play doesn’t always have to be big to be meaningful.
